Traditional Medical Approaches to Chronic Pain Fall Short.

If you’re reading this there’s a good chance you’ve tried everything to feel better, and you’re still living with pain every day. I have an alternative approach to solving your chronic pain, based on my 25+ years as an orthopedic clinician, I’d like to share with you.
Chronic or difficult pain is often treated using what I call “component thinking” which means practitioners are simply targeting a small part of your body–the tissues that are damaged or irritated.

The pain cycle starts when well-meaning component thinking solutions are applied to treat chronic pain. The alternative path to recovery, one that works far more effectively on chronic conditions is what I call “systems thinking”

The problem with component thinking is that it works best for simple pain issues like strains, tears, or broken bones. You go to your health care practitioner because of pain, they identify the damage and then treat those tissues to help them heal. This healing process is heavily dependent on the body’s natural internal repair process – cut skin may take a few days, torn muscles may take a few weeks, and broken bones may require 6-8 weeks to heal.

Component thinking approaches begin to fail when pain doesn’t go away after this natural healing process should have occurred and turns into a more complex, chronic condition. This indicates a “systems problem” – meaning there is a system of stressors acting on your tissues, irritating or interrupting this natural process of healing.

We have hundreds of tests and scans in medicine to identify damaged tissues, but zero tests or scans to determine why that damage is happening – Disc, nerve, or joint problems usually don’t simply happen on their own –something you’re doing is creating those issues.

When pain lasts longer than three months, the only logical path is to figure out what these systems problems are. This requires a deeper understanding of the connections in our bodies. Unfortunately, medical education doesn’t adequately teach this type of understanding. This is why there are so many “component thinking” approaches to chronic pain – everything from massage and TENS units to surgery. In fact, most solutions online are component thinking solutions.

One thing is for sure - if you’re still in pain after three months, you have a system problem.

Low back pain or sciatic pain are two of the most common types of chronic pain. This is because the low back is the most commonly misunderstood area of your body. Low back pain is usually caused by how you walk, sit, or stand. (I share a couple of tests in my back pain masterclass so you can feel this in your own body).

Case in point: A patient came to see me because she had plantar fasciitis in both her feet. Although she came to me about her feet, the real problem was her 15-year chronic back pain. She gave up on fixing it. Years ago, she was a collegiate swimmer at a large university but had to quit due to her back pain. Fifteen years later she was still in so much pain that I couldn’t even finish her exam. Relying on my years of understanding of how the body works, I could see her problem just by watching her walk to my table. I showed her how to change the way she walked and in three days she was 75% better – in both her plantar fasciitis and back pain!

“ I showed her how to change the way she walked and in three days she was 75% better - in both her plantar fasciitis and back pain!”

She wasn’t broken. She simply wasn’t approached from a systems perspective.

In my 25-year career as an orthopedic and sports physical therapist and clinic owner in Denver, CO., the most frustrating part of my job was treating patients who were suffering from chronic pain unnecessarily.
We had an excellent reputation for solving difficult pain problems. In fact, there was a long waiting list to see us. We used my “systems approach” to solve these chronic pain problems. I’ve put these solutions into my easy-to-follow Fixing You Method home programs.
My closing message to you is you’re not broken. You just haven’t been given the right information to take control of your pain. You can break your chronic pain cycle for good using simple systems thinking solutions I’ve helped thousands of people do just that and I want you to be the next.
